Picturesque Spain by David Roberts

{vsig}im_espana_pintoresca{/vsig}

Crowning work of the prized Scottish Romantic painter David Roberts. The fantastic lithographs of Roberts’ drawings contributed greatly to the diffusion of the exotic image of Spain and Andalusia throughout the world, as did the novel, Carmen, around the same time. This is an essential title for any lover of Spanish Art and History.

David Roberts was a Scottish Romantic painter known for his watercolours and prints of Spanish and Egyptian monuments.

Between the years 1832-33 Roberts travelled through Spain and arrived at Tangier making multiple drawings which, on his return to London, were converted to Lithographs by other artists. These lithographs were used to illustrate several books covering journeys through Spain by several English writers. In these drawings Roberts enhanced the sites he saw by altering the scale of the buildings and also adding vegetation and other elements that provided a romantic and picturesque touch to places already evocative. Without doubt his friendship with Pérez de Villaamil notably influenced the change in style of this Spanish painter in the same way as he influenced Gustavo Doré, who years later would tour Spain emulating the precedent set by Roberts. As a confirmation of his success, he was appointed Academician of the Royal Academy of London in 1841.

Nowadays, his paintings are immensely valued in the field of Art collecting. The Prado Museum owns four paintings of his; A view of Seville, The Golden Tower, a landscape of Alcala de Guadaira and an interior view of the Cathedral of Burgos.
